Preparing for a School Open House

Finding the right school for your child can be overwhelming. Whether your child is going into kindergarten, or your family is exploring a possible transition between schools, one thing is certain: Change can be difficult for all parties involved. At Denver Christian Academy, we understand the emotions that go into choosing the perfect school for your child to thrive, learn and grow academically and spiritually. Because of this, we offer monthly open houses, as well as private tours, where we invite you and your family to come explore and experience DCA for yourself.

At our open houses, we encourage you to bring the entire family, come prepared with questions and meet our friendly staff. You may wonder what questions you should ask or how to prepare for a school open house, so we came up with some tips to help you get started.

Before You Visit

Research schools that line up with your family’s values. Are you looking for your child to take part in a Christ-centered education? If you are considering a private school in the Charlotte or Lake Norman area, consider the cost of attendance. If cost is a concern, don’t be discouraged. There are many scholarship opportunities to assist.

If possible, speak to parents who have children currently attending the school you are interested in. This will give you first-hand knowledge on what to expect when you visit.

When You Visit

First and foremost – If your children can make it, bring them along! Watch how the teachers and staff interact with your child. Are they engaged and excited your family is there? Do they invite you to tour the school and ask questions about your family? This is always a huge plus. It’s important to feel like you are welcomed into the environment that your child may spend most of his or her time in the near future.

Come prepared with a list of questions and take notes. A school open house can be overwhelming, so having a list handy will ensure all of your questions get answered. Some of the questions you may consider asking are the following:

  • How long does your school day/week last?
  • Will my child change classes throughout the day?
  • What kind of extracurricular activities will my child have?
  • Are uniforms required?
  • Do you offer a referral program?

After You Visit

After you visit a school’s open house, take time to reflect on your experience. Discuss with other family members, as well as your child, how they felt during the process. Ask what they liked, or what made them hesitant. If you are interested in the school don’t be afraid to reach out with additional questions, or even schedule a private tour! Going to visit the school again may give you the final confirmation you need that you have found the right spot for your child to learn and grow.
